Lower Woods in Gloucestershire
Lower woods is an ancient woods now managed by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust.
The woods covers over approximately 740 acres, comprising not only ancient trees, but also a stream and numerous walks throughtout.
The woods have three defined walks, but there are many paths throughout, allowing you to walk freely through thick and thin underbrush. Seat are also located along the routes for you to simply sit and take in the fresh air and sounds of nature.
Areas of the woods are being prepared for a small herd of cattle, some wood is left to decay on the floor as an additional habitat for the smaller insects.
While you walk amongst the trees and flowers, pay attention to what you are walking on, there are outcrops of stones and ancient paths, consider that most of what are seeing existed before you, and will exist after your departure.
The little Avon River that flows through the woods can be walked over using one of the two bridges, during dry seasons you can walk along the river bed itself, if you are feeling very brave there are also a few natural bridges buildt by fallen trees!
A lot of effort has been made in making the paths a little more friendlier, and also some rural fencing has been built, all making the woods a nicer place to visit, no matter what the weather!
